Who still likes social democracy? The support base of social democratic parties reconsidered

Social democratic parties have experienced a profound electoral crisis in recent years. We study who still supports the centre-left by analysing two different ties to social democracy: vote choice and party identification. develop simple typology, which categorises voters into ‘core supporters’, ‘distant ‘demobilised supporters’ ‘non-supporters’. While demobilised supporters identify with but do not for them, distant them. Based on data from European Survey, we then show that working-class are more likely be than middle-class voters, whereas heterogeneous group. Union membership as well pro-redistribution pro-immigration attitudes positively correlated being core supporter. This helps us re-evaluate support base of contribute better understanding their current crisis.
